Carolina 4, Tennessee 3
Zebulon, NC ---- The Carolina Mudcats (32-38) ended their season on a positive note Monday afternoon, knocking off the Tennessee Smokies (37-33) by a 4-3 final at Five County Stadium.
Carolina ended a 2-2 tie in the third inning and never looked back. Mudcats second baseman Chase Lambin led the inning off with his 15th homerun of the season, a solo shot to give Carolina its first lead the game. Centerfielder Jai Miller then doubled in Grant Psomas for the two run lead.
Miller ended the day with that at-bat. The Selma, AL native entered the game hitting .257 and after going 2-2 , finished with a .261 average.
The game saw a pair of highly touted prospects opposed each other on the mound. Carolina starter Chris Volstad earned the victory against Smokies starter Jeff Samardzija to improve his record to 4-2.
Tennessee added a run in the fifth inning when centerfielder Tyler Colvin reached off a Grant Psomas error. Colvin manufactured two steals and eventually scored by an Alan Rick sacrifice ground out.
The game ended on an outfield assist as Carolina right fielder Ryan Bear fielded a rocket shot off Colvin’s bat. Bear hit Lambin as the cutoff as Lambin gunned down Smokies second baseman Nate Spears from shallow right field.
That play will end the Mudcats season on a two game winning streak.
