Tennessee 7, Carolina 4
Zebulon, NC- A late rally by the Carolina Mudcats (30-38) fell short in the ninth inning as the Tennessee Smokies (37-31) win for the third straight time Saturday night by a 7-4 final at Five County Stadium.
Carolina scored all four runs in the ninth with two outs, three came off one swing of the bat. With the bases loaded and two away, Grant Psomas cleared the bases as he crushed a ball off the top of the left-centerfield wall, some 375 feet away. Psomas’ three RBI double cut the lead in half but that’s all the offense Carolina could muster. Jai Miller forced out earlier in the inning to score Johnny Raburn from third.
Mudcats starter Gaby Hernandez got off to a rough start, allowing four runs off two home runs. Smokies third baseman Kyle Reynolds drove in three of those runs with his ninth shot of the season. First baseman Issmael Salas followed suit with his eighth on the year, a solo home run.
Tennessee would add three more runs, one in the fifth and a pair in the sixth. Tyler Colvin added his name to the home run list, a solo shot in the fifth. The Smokies manufactured two runs a inning later when left fielder Gary Cates drove both in with a single.
Smokies starter Donnie Veal improves his record to 8-10 with the win despite walking six Mudcats batters. Carolina drew 10 walks Saturday but stranded 14 runners. Hernadez gets the lose, lasting 5.2 innings with six hits and seven runs, all but two were earned.
Carolina will try to snap the eight game losing streak Sunday night with Blake McGinley (6-9, 4.26). Tennessee will try to win the Northern division with Justin Berg (7-7, 5.13). Game Time will be at 7:15 due to the city of Zebulon celebrating its 100 birthday.
