Tennessee 3, Carolina 2
Zebulon, NC- Tennessee Smokies (36-31) first baseman Issmael Salas sent a ninth inning slice just fair down the right field line to drive in the go-ahead run of a 3-2 victory over the Carolina Mudcats (30-37) Friday night at Five County Stadium.
Salas’s two-out RBI double off Mudcats pitcher Ben Julianel snapped a 2-2 tie which was formed in the seventh inning. Carolina entered the seventh down by two runs but Grant Psomas led off the inning with his 18th home run on the season and second in as many nights. Psomas’s shot derailed a cruising Smokies starter Mark Holliman because Carolina right fielder Ryan Bear followed with his 10th home run to tie the game.
Jesse Estrada pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Smokies to earn his first Southern League victory. Geoffrey Jones picks up his ninth save on the year thanks to a perfect ninth inning.
Smokies third baseman Casey McGehee hit a two run homer just off the left field netting in the fourth inning, giving Tennessee an early 2-0 lead off Mudcats starter Chris Seddon.
Seddon lasted seven innings, scattering four hits while striking out five. Counterpart Holliman also pitched seven and gave up two earned runs. Both starters had a no decision with Craig Molldrem earning the loss. With the victory, the Smokies stayed ahead of the Chattanooga Lookouts in the standings and alive in the playoff hunt.
Tennessee will try to clinch a playoff berth tomorrow night at 6:15 with southpaw Donnie Veal (7-10, 5.17) on the mound. Carolina will oppose with Gaby Hernandez (9-10, 4.07).
