Carolina 3, Huntsville 2
Huntsville, AL --- Carolina's late-season push toward the post-season has not been snuffed out yet, with Carolina completing its series at first-place Huntsville with a 3-2 victory over the playoff-bound Stars at Joe Davis Stadium on Friday night.
The Mudcats, which were eight games out of first place last Friday night, crept back to within four after beating the Stars for the fourth time in five games. Jai Miller hit his second home run in as many nights, crushing a Sam Narron 1-1 pitch over the centerfield wall with two outs and two on in the third inning to give Carolina (30-30) a 3-1 lead.
Chris Volstad (W, 3-1) won his third straight start, working seven strong innings allowing three hits and one walk. Volstad was removed after his 83-pitch effort, relieved by Ben Julianel in the eighth. Julianel's first pitch was hit for a home run by Steve Moss, but retired the next three batters.
Brandon Villafuerte (S, 4) registered his fourth save in four tries by working a scoreless ninth inning.
With 10 games remaining, the Mudcats venture to their final city, opening a five-game series at first-place Montgomery on Saturday night. James Russ (4-2, 3.97) starts against Wade Davis (5-3, 3.16) at Riverwalk Stadium.
