Mississippi 7, Carolina 4
Zebulon, NC- The Mississippi Braves (19-35) stepped closer to sweeping the Carolina Mudcats (25-29), defeating them for the fourth straight night by a 7-4 mark Friday night at Five County Stadium.
With the score tied at three in the eighth inning, Braves left fielder Mark Jurich sent a solo shot off the right field scoreboard. Van Pope then reached base due to a Chase Lambin error. Carolina ended the night with four errors, including two in the eighth. The other came with two outs when Mudcats first baseman Grant Psomas sat back on a ball which took a wide hop to his left. Pope reached home on the error, giving Mississippi a 5-3 lead.
The Braves tacked on one more run in the ninth when T.J. Bohn scored off a Brandon Villafuerte wild pitch. Bohn reached by a Lee Mitchell error. Tough night for Carolina as three runs scored via errors.
Carolina bats were awakened in the fifth thanks to a pinch hit three run jack off the bat of Dante Brinkley. Brinkley hit his 10th homer to the deepest part of Five County Stadium, well over 400 feet. Grant Psomas also went long in the eighth inning, a solo shut to cut the Mudcat deficit to 6-4.
Carolina reliever James Russ drops his record to 1-4 as he picks up the loss despite getting one out in the ball game. Mississippi starter Francisley Bueno earns the win, lasting five innings of four hit baseball. Bueno is now 4-6.
Mississippi will call upon James Parr (3-5, 4.81) to complete the sweep of Carolina. Parr will face Chris Volstad (1-1, 0.46) at 6:15 Saturday night.
