Mississippi 6, Carolina 0

Zebulon, NC- The Mississippi Braves (17-35) got a strong start by Ryan Baerlocher who combined with Wes Wilkerson to shut out the Carolina Mudcats 6-0 Wednesday night at Five County Stadium.

Baerlocher, making his fourth AA start on the year, scattered five hits over eight innings to lower his earned run average from 7.47 to 4.94. Baerlocher took advantage of an early lead thanks to a three-run third inning.

Braves third baseman Van Pope started the inning with a leadoff double and was eventually brought home by J.C. Holt. Holt hit a hot shot to Mudcats (25-27) first baseman Grant Psomas who attempted to get Pope out at home. The throw was not in time and Mississippi ended the inning scoring three runs. The Braves scored again two innings later by an RBI double off the bat of T.J. Bohn.

Not much offense Wednesday for Carolina, with Psomas picking up two hits. Johnny Raburn, Eric Riggs, Dante Brinkley and Ben Julianel all had a single.

Carolina was hoping a major league rehab start by Ricky Nolasco would silence the Braves bats. Instead, Nolasco lasted just three innings giving up two hits while striking out two and walking one. Ben Julianel came in relief and gave up two runs in the fifth. Chris Mobley, Jesus Delgado and Brandon Villafuerte combined for four innings of shutout baseball.

Despite the good relief for Carolina, it was overshadowed by Mississippi pitching. Wilkerson pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the shutout.

Chris Seddon (5-8, 4.92) will attempt to swing the momentum for Carolina Thursday night. Opposing Seddon for Mississippi will be another southpaw, Kelvin Villa (7-9, 5.09). 7:15 will be the start time.
