Carolina 19, Jacksonville 3
Jacksonville, FL --- The Carolina Mudcats exorcised a year-long cache of frustrations at the Baseball Grounds in stomping the Southern League's best team 19-3 in Jacksonville Friday night.
The Mudcats scored eight times in the first against Joey Norrito, then lighted the scoreboard for seven in the ninth off of two Suns position players.
The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak at the Baseball Grounds, and lifted Carolina to 2-12 in Jacksonville this season.
Gaby Hernandez (W, 8-9) earned the victory thanks to the second-highest run outburst in club history, trumped only by the 2003 Mudcats paced by Miguel Cabrera, when they scored a 20-4 victory in Greenville. Hernandez, who tossed a complete game against the Suns (31-17, 72-46) two starts back, littered nine hits over six innings, fanning three. Brandon Villafuerte, Scott Nestor and James Russ combined for the final three innings.
The Mudcats (23-25, 51-67) sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning against Norrito, who entered the game with a 3.10 ERA, sixth best in the league. Two Suns errors extended the innings before Johnny Raburn doubled past Blake Dewitt at third base to score two more runs.
After Jacksonville's pitching staff labored through the middle innings, utility man Jimmy Rohan entered to pitch a scoreless eighth, then scuffled in the ninth allowing a solo homer to Rex Rundgren, hitting two batters and permitting three other hits. The final position player on the Suns bench - AJ Ellis - relieved Rohan and finished the inning, but not before Rundgren grounded out to score another run. Rundgren started the ninth inning as a pinch-hitter.
Every Mudcat starter had at least one hit, with Jai Miller going 2-4 with his 12th homer. The Mudcats lashed out 18 hits, including two from Raburn, who knocked in three runs.
The fourth game of the series is Saturday night with Chris Volstad (0-1, 0.66) starting against Zach Hammes (5-6, 4.33) at 7:05 PM ET.
