Jacksonville 3, Carolina 2

Jacksonville, FL --- Thomas Giles singled in a pair of runs in the fourth inning to position the Jacksonville Suns for a 3-2 victory over the Carolina Mudcats in the series opener at the Baseball Grounds on Wednesday night.

Giles pulled a 3-2 pitch from starter Chris Seddon (L, 5-8) into right field on one hop to score James Tomlin and Juan Gonzalez to extend upon a 1-0 Suns advantage.  Jacksonville (30-16, 71-45) went ahead 1-0 in the third against Seddon on an opposite-field double by Kevin Howard to bring home Blake Dewitt from first base.

Seddon escaped a bases loaded, one-out situation in the first inning created when AJ Ellis drilled Seddon near the left ankle with a batted ball after two hitters had reached.  After making three warmup pitches to determine if Seddon could continue, he did and forced out a Sun baserunner at home on a grounder to first baseman Grant Psomas, then retired Cory Dunlap on a bouncer to third.

Jason McDonald (W, 5-1) registered his second win in two starts over Carolina (22-24, 50-66) working five shutout innings, striking out three. Carolina sliced into the deficit in the seventh against Suns reliever Greg Miller when Ryan Bear singled home Chase Lambin.  In the eighth, the Mudcats loaded the bases with none out against Miller, who retired Eric Riggs on a sacrifice fly to center to score Jai Miller.  Lambin fanned before Psomas smashed a one-hopper to Miller at the mound.  Miller lifted his glove before his face to deflect the grounder, sending the ball toward the first base line.  Miller's glove was knocked off his hand, but chased down the ball and threw Psomas out at first base to end the inning.

The Suns have now beaten Carolina 19 of 26 meetings, including 11 of 12 at the Baseball Grounds.

The five-game series continues Thursday night at 7:05 PM ET with Jimmy Serrano (4-1, 3.33) starting against Los Angeles' 2nd-rated prospect Clayton Kershaw, who will make his Double-A debut for the Suns.
