Carolina 9, West Tenn 8
Zebulon, NC --- Lee Mitchell's 30th career Carolina home run catapulted the Mudcats past West Tenn 9-8, beating the Diamond Jaxx for the sixth consecutive meeting on Saturday night.
After the Mudcats' bullpen permitted five runs in the top of the eighth to trail 8-5, Eric Riggs doubled home Alejandro DeAza, then following a walk, Mitchell cranked out a three-run homer against reliever Mumba Rivera (L, 4-5) to send Carolina (21-21) back to the .500 mark in the second half.
West Tenn (16-26) went ahead 1-0 in the first against Jimmy Serrano, who was activated from the disabled list to make the start. Carolina tied the game in the fourth on a Frank Moore homer to right. The Diamond Jaxx scored twice in the fifth on a single by Brent Johnson to capture a 3-1 lead, but the Mudcats scored once in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Chase Lambin, then three in the sixth, batting around after the first two hitters were retired.
Leading 5-3, West Tenn scored five times in the eighth against Scott Tyler and Jesus Silva (W, 1-4), but the Mudcats earned their 21st comeback victory of the season with their eighth inning rally.
Mitchell drove in four runs, and moved into a third-place tie in Carolina history in home runs with Chip Ambres. Mark Johnson's 44 homers is the club record.
Gaby Hernandez (7-8, 3.34) starts Sunday afternoon's game against Justin Thomas (3-7, 5.04) at 2:00 PM ET.
