Carolina 5, Jacksonville 2
Zebulon, NC- Gaby Hernandez pitched a complete game Monday night to give the Carolina Mudcats (18-20) a 5-2 victory over the Jacksonville Suns (26-12) at Five County Stadium.
Carolina gave Hernandez an early five run lead, giving him some breathing room. Johnny Raburn started a third inning campaign that saw five straight extra base hits off Suns starter Justin Orenduff. Rex Rundgren followed Raburn’s double with a triple which started the scoring on the night. Chase Lambin then sent a rocket over the right field fence to give Carolina a 3-0 lead. A pair of doubles by Lee Mitchell and Frank Moore ended the Mudcats’ scoring on the night.
But it was Hernandez’s command that proved the lead was all he needed for a victory. The right-hander from Miami scattered seven hits while allowing just one hitter to see three balls in the count.
Hernandez ran into trouble in the seventh when three consecutive Jacksonville hits brought in a run. However, a double play ended the threat and kept Hernandez in the game. Jacksonville’s other run was scored an inning later in the eighth, a solo homer by Blake DeWitt.
Hernandez picks up the win to improve his record to 7-8 and gets his first victory over the Suns this season in five starts against them. Orenduff sees his record fall to 6-4.
Both teams will look to take a series lead Tuesday night as Blake McGinley (3-7, 4.71) throws for Carolina while Joey Norrito (7-1, 2.81) goes for Jacksonville. 7:15 will be the start time.
