| Carolina 7, Jacksonville 6
Zebulon, NC --- Brad Davis' third hit of the game culminated a two-run, ninth inning rally as Carolina outdueled Jacksonville 7-6 at Five County Stadium in the series opener Saturday night.
After a single by Ryan Bear equaled the game 6-6, Davis drove the first pitch he saw from Cory Wade shy of the warning track to score pinch-runner Dante Brinkley to claim just Carolina's fifth win in 21 games against the Suns this season.
Carolina (17-19) entered the bottom of the ninth after losing a top-half lead when Jacksonville scored twice against closer Chris Mobley (W, 7-1).
Chris Seddon allowed just one unearned run over six innings, taking a no-decision in his third start against the Suns (25-11). Carolina went ahead 1-0 in the second inning on Davis' first hit, a two-out double to score Bear. The Mudcats pushed across two quiet runs against Suns starter Greg Miller in the fourth.
Miller walked the first four batters of the inning, including Jai Miller to force home a run. Alvis Ojeda relieved Miller and permitted just one more run to score on a sacrifice fly to Rex Rundgren.
The Suns chipped away with an unearned run in the fifth and another in the seventh against reliever Scott Nestor, but Grant Psomas doubled in Johnny Raburn in the seventh followed by a groundout by Bear to increase the lead to 5-2. Matt Yourkin allowed two in the eighth before the Suns tied and went ahead against Mobley, who blew his second straight save opportunity.
Carolina remains four games behind Chattanooga, which moved into sole possession of the Northern Division lead with its sixth straight victory.
Chris Volstad makes his Double-A debut on Sunday at 2:00 PM ET against Jacksonville's James McDonald (2-1, 1.15).
