Carolina 7, Montgomery 6
Zebulon, NC- Dante Brinkley’s game winning two-out single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Carolina Mudcats a 7-6 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits before 5,684 fans at Five County Stadium.
The Mudcats (14-15) were cruising along with a 4-0 lead after four innings but the Biscuits (20-9) would crawl their way back. Biscuits star third baseman Evan Longoria sent a two-run home run rocketing to centerfield in the sixth inning, cutting the Mudcats lead to one. Montgomery then tied the game an inning later by a Brooks Badeaux groundout.
Carolina would take the lead for the second time with two runs in the seventh thanks to a pair of RBI hits by Rex Rundgren and Dante Brinkley. The 6-4 score would stick around until the game was one out away from being completed.
Mudcats closer Chris Mobley gave up a leadoff double to Erold Andrus starting the ninth but appeared to pitch out of the jam. Fernando Perez sent a two hopper to second base, which would have been a routine out had it not hit Andrus while standing on second. The two runners eventually scored by a two-out, two-RBI single by Reid Brignac.
Having suffered the second blown save on the night, the game looked to be headed extra but Carolina hitters took charge in the ninth. Brad Davis legged out a two out infield to keep the Mudcats alive. A Rundgren single to right stationed runners at the corners. Rundgren then moved to second on the first pitch home from losing pitcher Richard DeLosSantos, whose 3-2 pitch to Brinkley was grounded into centerfield to score Davis with the winning run.
Grant Psomas clubbed his 13th homer in the second inning against Biscuits starter Derek Feldkamp. Jimmy Serrano worked six strong innings, permitting three runs on three hits as the Carolina starter.
With the series tied 2-2, the rubber game will feature James Russ (1-3, 3.71) for Carolina as he faces Jonathan Barratt (2-7, 5.26). The Saturday game is set for a 6:15 PM ET.
