Carolina 4, Montgomery 1

Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats (13-14) jumped to an early lead Wednesday afternoon and held on to a 4-1 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits (19-8) at Five County Stadium, snapping a 10-game losing skid to the Biscuits.

Carolina scored three in the last of the first, sprinting to an early lead.  Eric Riggs opened the hit parade with a two-out double, and scored on a Lee Mitchell single. Grant Psomas then waited on a 1-1 pitch and sent it over the left field wall onto the roof of the Mudcats clubhouse. Psomas two-run homer was his 12th on the season and increased his RBI total to 41.

That was all the offense Mudcats starter Gaby Hernandez (W, 6-8) needed that afternoon. Hernandez pitched around some command problems to last six innings, scattering three hits and allowing just one earned run. Matt Yourkin and Mauro Zarate then came in relief to pitch one shutout inning respectively before Chris Mobley pitched the ninth to earn his sixth save.

Shortstop Reid Brignac was the toughest out in the Biscuits lineup, earning 60 percent of his teams hits. Brignac picked up three hits, but perhaps his only out of the afternoon was the biggest. With Montgomery rolling and a fatigued Hernandez on the mound, Brignac stepped up to the plate with two runners in scoring position. Hernandez won the battle and got him to fly out.

Carolina defeated Montgomery for the first time since July 12 of last season, and is now winners of five of their last six. Jimmy Serrano (3-1, 2.91) will be asked to continue that streak as he will face the Biscuits Thursday night at 7:15. Opposing Serrano will be righthander Christopher Mason (11-4, 2.45). Mason leads the Southern league in wins and earned run average.
