Jackson, TN --- Carolina hit three home runs while Ryan Bear amassed five hits as the Mudcats defeated West Tenn 8-2 at Pringles Park on Friday night.
Rex Rundgren and Dante Brinkley went back-to-back in the second inning with Brad Davis smacking a solo homer in the seventh to provide the power of the 15-hit attack. Bear had four singles and a double, driving in two runs to champion the effort. Bear lifted his average from .243 to .258.
Jimmy Serrano (W, 3-1) worked five innings, permitting three hits and a fifth inning run to earn the victory. Serrano retired 11 straight batters at one stage of the game, then turned the ball over to a near flawless Mudcats bullpen. Matt Yourkin worked two perfect innings, followed by a 1-2-3 eighth inning from Mauro Zarate. Chris Mobley was touched for two hits and a ninth inning run.
With the victory, Carolina (10-13) closed to within two games of Northern Division co-leaders Chattanooga and Huntsville. Tennessee missed out on a chance to tie for the lead, falling to Mobile, thus remaining one game behind.
James Russ (1-3, 3.71) starts Saturday night against Joe Woerman (4-4, 3.70) at 8:05 PM ET at Pringles Park.
