Zebulon, NC- The Tennesse Smokies’ (40-34/ 5-2) starter Justin Berg pitched a gem Sunday afternoon to defeat the Carolina Mudcats 4-1 at Five County Stadium.
The right-hander pitched 7.1 innings allowing just one run off six hits to pick up his fourth win. Berg proved to be too much for the Mudcats (28-48/0-7) as they had just three base runners for the first seven innings.
Mudcats starter Gaby Hernandez had a great outing as well, but picked up the loss to drop his record to 3-7. The Miami native lasted seven innings letting in only two runs.
Carolina made things interesting in the eighth, loading the bases with only one out. Smokies manager Pat Listach would go to the bullpen and Rocky Roquet escaped with only one run off an Eric Riggs’ single. Roquet picks up his first Southern League save.
The Mudcats ended a 0-33 drought with runners in scoring position by a Jai Miller single in the eighth.
The Smokies held a 2-0 lead until the eighth inning when third baseman Matt Craig blasted a two-run shot.
The Smokies would never look back as Carolina remains winless in the second half, dropping seven straight.
The Mudcats hope to bounce back tomorrow night as Jimmy Serrano (0-1, 3.86) takes on the Smokies who will send Kevin Hart (3-5, 5.08) to the mound. First pitch will be 7:15 Monday night.
