Carolina 4, Chattanooga 3 (11)
Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats (26-41) ended Thursday night with their second consecutive walk-off hit to defeat the Chatanooga Lookouts 4-3 at Five County Stadium.
The Mudcats extended their win streak to five games as shortstop Rex Rundgren hit a two out double in the 11th inning. Rundgren was gunned down at home by Lookouts centerfielder Marland Williams to send the game into extra innings. The shortstop ended the night with three hits, two doubles.
Carolina took the lead in the third inning with a pair of runs. The 2-0 lead would hold as Mudcats starter Gaby Hernandez retired eight Lookout hitters in order. Hernandez reached trouble with two outs in the six. Lookouts (28-39) left fielder Jay Garthwaite hit a two-out, two RBI double to tie the game.
The Mudcats threatened in the seventh with runners on the corner with two outs. Mudcats manager Brandon Hyde sent pinch hitter Vince Harrison to the plate with catcher Brett Hayes at third. Lookouts reliever Rick Asadorian threw a wild pitch which scored Hayes.
The 3-2 Mudcats lead held for one out as Lookouts first baseman Tonys Guiterrez sent a solo shot to right, one out into the eighth.
Mudcats reliever Craig Molldrem (3-2) picks up the win, going two innings of no hit baseball. Lookouts pitcher Justin Mallett (2-5) earns earns the loss in the 11th.
A pair of righties will square off Friday. James Russ (0-2, 4.54) will take the mound for Carolina as James Avery (5-7, 6.04). First pitch is set for 7:15 with fireworks promptly following the game.
