Carolina 5, Tennessee 4 (11)
Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats (23-41) knock off the Tennessee Smokies in 11 innings 5-4 at Five County Stadium Sunday.
Vince Harrison started the eleventh inning with a single, which was followed up by two more base hits. With the bases loaded and only one out, Harrison tagged up and slid under a Casey McGehee tag to win the game.
The Smokies (33-29) started the scoring when left fielder Jorge Cortes tripled in Casey McGehee in the top of the second. Cortes then scored off a Joe Simokaitis sacrifice fly. The Mudcats cut the lead in half when catcher John Purdom hit his first homer run as a Mudcats, a solo shot over the left field wall.
After a pair of runs, Carolina scored two runs in the seventh to go ahead of the second place Smokies. Mudcats shortstop Jonny Raburn reached on a single and swiped second. He was brought home by a Jai Miller single. After a pair of Miller stolen bases, he scored the go ahead run off a Purdom sac fly, his second Mudcat RBI.
The Smokies tied the game up at four in the ninth, but fell out of first place in the North with six left in the first half with the defeat.
Chris Mobley (2-0, 3.18) earned the win in relief while Jerry Blevins absorbed the loss, falling to 1-2. The two teams square off in the series finale tomorrow night at 7:15. Mudcats starter Jesus Delgado (4-5, 5.19) squares off against Paul Schappert (2-1, 2.70) for the Smokies.
