Carolina 10, Tennessee 3

Zebulon, NC -The Carolina Mudcats (21-40) exploded to a 10-3 victory over the Tennessee Smokies Thursday night at Five County Stadium to snap a nine-game losing streak.

The Mudcats picked up 13 hits on their first night back from a horrid 1-9 road trip.

Three Mudcats, Jose Campusano, Eric Riggs, and John Purdom, picked up three hits a piece.  Riggs scored his first homer as a Mudcat in the sixth inning with a two run shot over the right field fence.

The home run came an inning after Carolina scored five runs, sending nine batters to the plate. After a couple of singles to start the fifth inning, righfielder Ryan Bear sent two runs home thanks to a one out double. Purdom added two more runs with his bases clearing, two out single. Purdom and Bear ended the night with three RBI a piece to lead the Mudcats.

Carolina starter Daniel Barone pitched 4.2 innings, scattering seven hits while allowing three runs. Two runs came off the bat of Smokies (32-27) first baseman Jake Fox, who had two solo homers on the night.

Mudcats reliever Chris Mobley (1-0) picks up the victory in relief despite pitching just one-third of an inning. Smokies starter Justin Berg (2-4) earns the loss, going five innings and allowing seven runs.

Florida Marlins pitcher Josh Johnson will make his second rehab start of the season, this time with Carolina tomorrow night. Johnson went 12-7 last year for the Marlins, but has been sidelined with an irritated right ulnar nerve. The Oklahoma native spent his 2005 season with the Mudcats before being called up to the majors last in the season.

The Smokies will send Kevin Hart (3-5, 5.95) to the mound as they attempt to keep their first place position in the standings.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 PM ET.
