Zebulon, NC --- Adam Russell pitched into the seventh inning to lead the Birmingham Barons past the Carolina Mudcats 5-3 at Five County Stadium on Wednesday night.
Russell (W, 5-3) went 6 2/3 innings, permitting just five hits and walking none en route to his fifth win in 10 starts.
The Barons (21-26) never trailed in the game on their way to a sixth consecutive victory over the Mudcats (17-30), which beat Birmingham on the road on Opening Day, but has failed to defeat Birmingham since. Gaby Hernandez (L, 2-5) yielded nine hits, including five on two-strike pitches, permitting four runs (three earned) and a pair of walks.
Thomas Collaro added a solo homer in the seventh against reliever Criag Molldrem, his team-leading 10th.
The Mudcats hit two homers on the night, a conventional home run to left by Brad McCann, his second in two Double-A starts, while Jose Campusano wheeled around the bases on an inside the park homer to right-centerfield in the fifth, beating a bouncing relay throw to home plate. Russell had not permitted a home run all season.
The Barons have assaulted the Mudcats pitching staff for 25 hits in two games after collecting 13 on Wednesday night.
The five-game series continues Thursday with James Russ (0-0, 6.17) starting against Gio Gonzalez (4-3, 3.66), who leads the Southern League with 62 strikeouts in 46 1/3 innings. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 PM ET.
