Jacksonville 5, Carolina 3
Jacksonville, FL --- David Nicholson keyed a three-run, one-hit seventh inning with a two-run double to lead Jacksonville past the Carolina Mudcats 5-3 on Saturday night at the Baseball Grounds.
The Suns (24-19) won their third straight in the series, and sixth consecutively over the Mudcats (16-27). In Carolina's three losses to the Suns, Jacksonville won with a go-homer by Cory Dunlap in the last of the ninth on Thursday, broke up a no-hitter in the eighth inning en route to five runs on Friday, then overcame three one-run deficits on Saturday.
Up 3-2 in the seventh, reliever Scott Tyler (L, 0-2) walked two batters on eight straight balls, and was relieved by Jarrett Santos, whose first pitch was a ball, with catcher Brett Hayes throwing up the right field line in an attempt to pick off a runner. Dunlap scored from second to tie the game. Santos then walked the next two hitters to load the bases ahead of Nicholson's groundball double past Lee Mitchell's dive at third base.
The Suns' rally spoiled a fine start from James Russ, who was making just his third appearance of the season. Russ wokred 5 2/3 innings, permitting three hits and walking none. Russ allowed just solo homers to John Lindsey and Marshall McDougall.
Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the first on Chase Lambin's third homer of the season, taking out a Joey Norrito 0-2 pitch to the last row of the right field bleachers. A Grant Psomas double play ball in the fifth inning scored Lambin from third to give Carolina a 2-1 edge, then the Mudcats went ahead 3-2 in the seventh on a Ryan Bear single.
However with runners at first and second with no outs, the Mudcats could not manage another run. In the eighth, down 5-3, Carolina filled the bases with one out against closer Mark Alexander, but Hayes grounded to second to start a double play.
Rick Vanden Hurk (1-0, 1.88) starts Sunday at 3:05 PM ET against Jacksonville's Mike Megrew (3-2, 4.57).
