Zebulon, NC --- Mike Megrew and two relievers combined on a four-hit shutout as the Jacksonville Suns blanked the Carolina Mudcats 5-0 at Five County Stadium on Saturday night.
Megrew (W, 3-1) tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing his first hit in the fifth inning, a one-out single by Brett Carroll. Megrew registered eight strikeouts in seven innings, one day after the Suns' staff recorded 16 against the Mudcats' offense.
Manu Olivera (L, 0-4) lasted just 3 2/3 innings, permitting five runs, including three unearned runs in the Suns' fourth. Xavier Paul singled home Chin-Lung Hu from third base in the first inning, then a Wilkin Ruan grounder scored Marshall McDougall in the second.
With the bases loaded in the fourth and two outs, Megrew hit a two-hopper off of first baseman Grant Psomas' glove, while Psomas recovered the ball, he threw behind Olivera covering first base for an error as the ball tumbled down the Jacksonville dugout steps.
Olivera was removed from the game for Jarrett Santos, who allowed an RBI-single to right by Hu for a 5-0 lead. Hu finished the game 5-5 with three doubles, leading the Southern League with 15. Hu also added 30 points to his average with his perfect night, rising from .336 to .366.
The rubber game of the series with the Suns is Sunday at 2:00 PM ET with Jesus Delgado scheduled to come off of the disabled list to make the start against William Juarez.
