** Carolina 5, Tennessee 4 **
Sevierville, TN --- Brad Davis scored on a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to give Carolina a 5-4 victory over Tennessee on Saturday night at Smokies Park.
Davis singled to open the frame, then went to third on an errant pickoff throw from Geoffrey Jones (L, 0-1), then scored when pinch-hitter Ryan Bear hit a flyball down the right field line to bring Davis home.
Carolina (9-14) held 2-0, 3-2 and 4-3 leads only to see the first-place Smokies (10-11) tie the game on each occasion.
Gaby Hernandez worked a seven-inning start, his longest of the season, allowing nine hits and three runs. Craig Molldrem (W, 1-1) earned the victory, with Kurt Koehler (S, 3) registering the save when Josh Kroeger's bouncer toward second base hit Tennessee baserunner Joe Simokaitis to end the game.
Carolina, which hit a club-record six homers in the opener on Thursday, hit home runs to open the first two innings. Dante Brinkley took out Smokies starter Paul Schappert on an 0-2 pitch to start the game, then Knoxville native Brett Carroll went deep to left to begin the second.
Kroeger hit a two-run homer to tie the game in the third against Hernandez, part of a 4-5 night.
The Mudcats, now two games behind the Smokies, send Rick Vanden Hurk Sunday at 5:00 PM ET against Donnie Veal (0-4, 10.47).
