Zebulon, NC --- Lee Mitchell and Dante Brinkley each finished a hit shy of the cycle while Jai Miller went 4-4 as Carolina defeated Chattanooga 6-2 on Wednesday night at Five County Stadium.
The Mudcats (7-13) won their first series of the season in their fourth attempt thanks to three bats and a stellar outing by the bullpen.
Mitchell had a single, double and homer and scored three times, while Brinkley had all of the cycle components but a home run. Miller singled twice and doubled twice to lead the 12-hit attack.
Meanwhile, starting pitcher James Brauer experienced a harrowing moment in the first inning when Jay Garthwaite drilled a single off of the chest of Brauer. Brauer was down near the pitcher's mound for about five minutes when he summoned the strength to walk off the field under his own power. Brauer left the game, and was taken to a nearby hospital for X-rays.
Harvey Garcia (W, 1-0) pitched the next 3 1/3 innings to earn the win, not surrendering a run. Craig Molldrem, Scott Tyler and Jarred Santos combined for the final five frames.
Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the second on doubles by Mitchell and Miller, then scored three times in the third against ex-Mudcat Luke Lockwood (L, 0-3) thanks to a single by Chase Lambin and two-run homer by Mitchell. Leading 4-1 in the fifth, the Mudcats scored twice more on a Miller double and sacrifice fly from Rex Rundgren.
Carolina heads to first-place Tennessee Thursday night for the first of a five-game series at 7:15 PM ET. Jesus Delgado (2-1, 4.26) starts against Kevin Hart (2-1, 3.71).
