Zebulon, NC --- Emilio Bonifacio collected three hits and three RBI including a two-run triple in the ninth as Mobile handed Carolina its third straight loss, 5-1 at Five County Stadium on Friday night.
Bonifacio sailed a two-out, two-strike pitch from Kurt Koehler over the head of left fielder Ryan Bear to score Ronnie Merrill and Cesar Nicolas. Phil Avals then bunted the next pitch for a single to score Bonifacio to make it a 5-1 game.
Carolina (4-11) had an opportunity to tie the game in the eighth, filling the bases with two outs against relievers Dustin Glant (W, 1-2) and Matt Elliott.
Grant Psomas doubled with two outs, then Elliott entered to walk the first two hitters he faced before inducing a foul popout by Brett Carroll. Mobile (7-8) took a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo homer by Carlos Gonzalez, then Bonifacio legged out an infield RBI single in the second for a 2-0 advantage.
Psomas and Mitchell doubled to open the Carolina fourth against BayBears starter Osbek Castillo before he retired the next three hitters. The Mudcats managed five hits in the loss.
Carolina hosts Chattanooga Saturday night at 6:15 PM ET in the first of a five-game series. Jesus Delgado (1-1, 5.79) starts against Tyler Pelland (0-1, 1.98).
