Pearl, MS --- Mark Jurich delivered a pinch-hit, two-run single in the fifth inning to lift Mississippi to a 3-1 victory over Carolina on Saturday night at Trustmark Park, capping a 2-8 season-opening road trip for the Mudcats.
Jurich dropped the hit in front of Jai Miller in centerfield against James Brauer (L, 0-2) to overcome a 1-0 deficit. Brett Carroll hit a fourth inning sacrifice fly against Jose Ascanio (W, 1-0) to put the Mudcats (2-8) up 1-0.
The Braves (7-3) would add an insurance run in the eighth inning when Scott Tyler uncorked a wild pitch with two outs to score Brent Lillibridge from third base.
Former NC State Wolfpack closer Joey Devine (S, 1) pitched the final two innings to notch his first save of the season.
Carolina returns for its home opener at Five County Stadium on Monday night against the Mobile BayBears at 7:15 PM ET. Jesus Delgado will make the start opposite Mobile's Chris Kinsey.
