Pearl, MS --- Matt Esquivel singled home Brent Lillibridge in the third inning with the game's only run as the Mississippi Braves blanked the Carolina Mudcats 1-0 at Trustmark Park on Friday night.
One day after Carolina (2-7) shutout the Braves (6-3) on four hits, four Mississippi pitchers combined to two-hit the Mudcats. Lee Mitchell had each of Carolina's singles, in the second inning and the other in the ninth.
Carolina's best chance to tie the game was in the sixth, when the Mudcats loaded the bases without the benefit of a hit, thanks to two walks and a hit batter. Ryan Bear rolled into a double play to end the inning against relief pitcher Charlie Morton.
The Mudcats stranded they tying run at second base in the ninth inning as Frank Moore and Patrick Arlis were retired to end the game against Braves closer Zach Schrieber.
Carolina has lost seven of nine to begin the regular season, with Manu Olivera (L, 0-1) taking Friday's loss. Olivera worked 4 2/3 innings, permitting one run on five hits. Mississippi starter Kelvin Villa (W, 1-1) yielded just one hit over 5 1/3 innings, fanning seven, but walked six in the game.
Carolina stranded six runners during Villa's time on the mound, and eight for the game. Carolina has the league's worst-ranked batting average at .168 through nine games, and has been shutout three times.
The Mudcats' road trip concludes on Saturday night when James Brauer (0-1, 8.11) starts opposite Jose Ascanio (0-0, 4.50) at 8:05 PM ET. Carolina opens its home season on Monday night at 7:15 PM ET against the Mobile BayBears at Five County Stadium.
