** Mississippi 3, Carolina 2 **
Pearl, MS --- Brandon Jones connected for a two-run homer with none out in the last of the ninth to catapult the Mississippi Braves past the Carolina Mudcats 3-2 at Trustmark Park on Wednesday afternoon.
Jones, who hit his first home run of the season, drilled a 3-2 pitch from Christopher Young (L, 0-1) over the centerfield wall, sending Carolina (1-6) to its sixth straight defeat. Jones batted after a squib infield single from Brent Lillibridge hugged the third base line to open the ninth.
Carolina had taken a 2-1 lead in the fifth on Jai Miller's first Double-A hit, a two-run, opposite field homer against Braves starter JoJo Reyes.
Miller earned his second hit with a ninth inning double. Jarrod Saltalamacchia blasted a solo homer in the second inning off of Mudcats starter Daniel Barone, his third homer in two games, to give Mississippi a 1-0 lead. Barone worked a staff-high 5 2/3 innings, fanning eight in the no-decision.
Carolina appeared to have extended its 2-1 lead in the eight on a grounder by Kevin Randel, but Jose Campusano was called out at home plate on the throw from JC Holt.
Campusano appeared to have slid past home plate prior to a tag by Saltalamacchia that looked to have missed as well. Campusano had opened the inning with a bunt single, stole second and took third on a throwing error, and was at third base with one out when Randel hit a one-hopper to Holt.
The Braves (5-2) host Carolina on Thursday night for the middle game of a five-game series at 8:05 PM ET. Gaby Hernandez (0-1, 5.40) starts for Carolina opposite LHP Dan Smith (1-0, 0.00).
