** Birmingham 6, Carolina 4 **
Hoover, AL --- Thomas Collaro singled, tripled and homered to lead the Birmingham Barons past the Carolina Mudcats 6-4 on Sunday at Regions Park.
Collaro, who missed becoming the first Baron to hit for the cycle since Reggie Jackson in 1967, tripled in two first inning runs to give Birmingham (3-1) a 2-0 lead, then homered on the first pitch of the sixth against reliever Craig Molldrem (L, 0-1) to snap a 3-3 tie.
Carolina (1-3) rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game on a fifth inning single by Rex Rundgren, but Barons starter Wes Whisler speared a one-hopper from Brett Carroll to deny a tie-breaking hit, instead initiating a double play to end the inning.
Trailing 6-3 entering the ninth, the Mudcats staged a rally with three singles from Lee Mitchell, Ryan Bear and Patrick Arlis, but after pinch-hitter Kevin Randel fanned, Jonny Raburn walked to force in a two-out run. Rundgren worked the count to 3-2 before striking out swinging on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.
Manu Olivera started for Carolina, working four innings yielding five hits and three runs, while Harvey Garcia allowed an unearned run over his two frames.
Mitchell, Bear and Frank Moore each had two hits apiece to pace Carolina's offense.
Carolina completes its season-opening series Monday night against the Barons at 8:05 PM ET.
