Hoover, AL --- Three Birmingham pitchers limited Carolina to three hits for the second straight night, blanking the Mudcats 10-0 at Regions Park on Saturday night.
Jack Egbert (W, 1-0) struck out a career high 12 batters over six shutout innings to lead Birmingham (2-1) to its second straight triumph over the Mudcats (1-2). Egbert permitted just two hits, a first inning double by Grant Psomas and an infield single by Jose Campusano in the third. Jonny Raburn collected Carolina's only other hit, a single to right in the eighth inning.
Edwardo Sierra and Tim Bittner combined for the final three innings of relief for the Barons.
Gaby Hernandez (L, 0-1) suffered the loss in his Double-A debut. Hernandez, the #3 prospect in Florida's organization, permitted five hits and three runs, whiffing four in defeat. The Barons scored twice in the first inning with two outs on an infield single by Thomas Collaro followed by a run-scoring double by Cory Aldridge. Chris Kelly singled home a two-out run in the fifth.
The Barons slammed the game away in the eighth, scoring seven times against reliever Christopher Young. Two errors by second baseman Kevin Randel helped to spur the big inning, along with two-run hits from Jeremy West and Chris Getz. Of the seven runs in the frame, only two were charged to Young.
Carolina is hitting a Southern League-low .128 through the first three games of the regular season.
The fourth game of the series is slated for Sunday at 6:05 PM ET with Rick Vanden Hurk making his Double-A debut against Birmingham's Wes Whisler.
