Zebulon, NC --- Steven Jackson scripted his first nine-inning shutout of his career, tossing a three-hitter as Tennessee blanked Carolina 4-0 at Five County Stadium before 5,284 fans on Friday night.
Jackson (W, 4-6) retired the final 13 batters he faced, made just 107 pitches, and was never seriously threatened. Jackson fanned eight, walked none and allowed only one extra-base hit, a third inning double by Carolina's Jamie Athas.
Tennessee (7-5) assumed a 1-0 lead against Mudcats' starter Paul Mildren in the fourth inning when Jamie D'Antona drilled a double against the left field wall to score Jesus Cota from first. Cota reached when left fielder Frank Moore short-armed his line drive near the left field line for a two-base error.
Mildren (L, 6-7) maintained the 1-0 deficit into the seventh when the Smokies cleared a four-run lead. With one out, Phil Avlas, Alex Frazier and Alberto Gonzalez singled adding one to the lead, then after a sac bunt by Jackson, Danny Richar laced a double into right-center to score two.
Carolina (6-6) fell from a three-way tie for first with the loss, and will send Jose Garcia (2-1, 1.82) to the mound on Saturday night against Clint Goocher (3-5, 4.43) at 7:15 PM ET.
