Corwin Malone tossed seven solid innings to help Birmingham edge visiting Carolina, 3-2, on Saturday.
Malone (6-5) picked up the win after allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out five. The 25-year-old left-hander did not issue a walk while lowering his ERA to 4.03.
Dwayne Pollok recorded two outs in the eighth before Ehren Wasserman retired all four batters he faced to earn his 11th save.
Christopher Getz, Ricardo Nanita and Darren Blakely each picked up an RBI for the Barons (31-39), while Gustavo Molina and Thomas Collaro collected three hits apiece.
Carolina starter Adam Bostick II yielded two runs on six hits in four innings, striking out three and walking three. Mannyl Olivera (3-3) took the loss after surrendering one run on three hits over three innings.
Edgar Gonzalez belted a solo shot and J.C. Muniz smacked two doubles and scored a run for the Mudcats (32-38). --Christopher Heine/MLB.com
