Zebulon, NC --- Tyler Pelland pitched five innings for the victory and doubled home two runs as Chattanooga defeated Carolina 7-3 at Five County Stadium before 4,009 fans on Saturday night. The Lookouts (25-12) evened the series by touching up Mudcats starter Anibal Sanchez (L, 2-4) for seven runs over 4 2/3 innings.
Sanchez surrendered two runs in the first, then permitted three two-out runs in the fourth inning. Rick Asadoorian clubbed a triple off the centerfield wall, followed by a walk to Miguel Perez, then Sanchez threw away a bunt at first base by Anderson Machado to allow a run to score. Pelland then doubled over Alejandro DeAza to bring in a two more runs for a 5-1 lead.
The Mudcats (16-21), who fell nine games behind first place Chattanooga, misfired on a chance to get back into the game in the fourth with runners at second and third with none out against Pelland, but could not score.
A strikeout, foulout put Pelland on the verge of the exit, then a walk filled the bases before Sanchez bounced a hopper off of Pelland's glove, redirecting to third baseman Luis Bolivar, who nipped Sanchez at first to end the inning. Ryan Bear had four of Carolina's six hits, driving in all three runs. Alejandro DeAza scored all three runs for the Mudcats, reaching on a double and a pair of walks.
Adam Brandenburg pitched 3 1/3 hitless innings for the Mudcats, with Matt Blank tossing a scoreless ninth thanks to left fielder BJ Garbe gunning down Bolivar attempting to score on a single by ex-Mudcat Javier Colina.
James Russ (2-2, 2.83) starts Sunday afternoon against Steve Kelly (4-1, 3.13) at 2:00 PM ET.
