Zebulon, NC --- Aaron Herr hit a tie-breaking two-run homer in the sixth inning to lead the Chattanooga Lookouts by the Carolina Mudcats 5-3 at Five County Stadium on Saturday night.
Herr swatted a pitch from Christopher Young (L, 1-1) with two outs in the inning after a walk to Joey Votto.
Carolina (9-15) had tied the game 2-2 in the fourth inning against Steve Kelly (W, 3-1) on a groundout by Michael Tucker and a single by Rex Rundgren. The Mudcats built the ining on an infield hit by Angel Molina and a one-out double by Jonathan Aceves, who went 3-3 in the game.
Chattanooga scored twice against Carolina starter Paul Mildren in the second with two outs. Mildren walked Miguel Perez, then allowed a sliced double into left-center by Chris Dickerson to score Perez. On the throw home by shortstop Rundgren, Dickerson advanced to third, then continued in to score when the throw shorthopped Aceves and deflected toward the Mudcats dugout.
Carolina baserunning proved costly in the early and late innings. In the first, with Kelly struggling with his command, a pair of walks had the Mudcats in range with cleanup hitter Molina sitting on a 3-1 count. Jose Campusano was picked off of second base to stall the threat. In the second inning, with two on and none out, Kevin Randel was tossed trying to steal third base as Michael Tucker fanned. Then in the ninth inning, following a strikeout of Campusano, Jamie Athas overstepped first base on a pickoff throw from catcher Perez and was tagged out in foul territory.
The five-game series is tied 2-2 ahead of Sunday's rubber game. Ben Julianel (0-1, 2.25) starts for Carolina against Phil Dumatrait (0-1, 4.00) at 2:00 PM ET.
