Zebulon, NC --- The Carolina Mudcats and Chattanooga Lookouts split a doubleheader at Five County Stadium on Friday night before 5,908 fans.
The Lookouts (14-9) won Thursday night's fog-suspended game in extra innings 3-2, then Carolina rebounded with James Russ (W, 2-1) pitching his first career complete game in a 2-0 victory in the nightcap.
Russ, making his 53rd career start, permitted just four hits over seven innings, fanning six and not walking a hitter en route to the victory. Russ also singled in the second run of a two-run inning in the 2nd against Tyler Pelland (L, 1-1). Angel Molina drilled a line drive homer to left to put Carolina (9-14) ahead 1-0.
Russ retired the final eight hitters of the game, including three flyouts to right fielder Molina to end the split. In the suspended game, the Lookouts began the resumption ahead 1-0 only to have the Mudcats tie the game on a single by Lee Mitchell in the sixth inning against Jung Bong (W, 1-1).
In the eighth, Chattanooga pushed across two runs against Taylor Tankersley (L, 0-1). Norris Hopper bunted for a one-out hit, then advanced to third on a single by Joey Votto. Aaron Herr, who knocked in a run in the first inning, doubled inside the right field line to bring in one run, and Votto scored on a fumble by Molina retrieving the ball.
In the bottom of the eighth, Carolina manufactured a rally against David Shafer (S, 7). Rex Rundgren singled to begin the inning, followed by a one-out single by Jose Campusano. with two outs, Mitchell flared a single to right to fill the bases, then Ryan Bear walked to force in a run to cut the deficit to 3-2. Molina came up next, swinging at the first pitch and popping up in front of the pitchers mound, only to have Herr swoop in at the last moment to make the catch just off of the top of the grass to end the game and preserve the Lookouts victory.
The fourth game of the series is Saturday night at Five County Stadium with Paul Mildren (2-1, 5.14) starting against Steve Kelly (2-1, 2.82) at 7:15 PM ET.
