Sevierville, TN --- Alberto Gonzalez laid down a perfect safety squeeze bunt in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 game leading Tennessee to a 3-1 victory over Carolina at Smokies Park on Monday night.
Tennessee (8-11), which won for the third time in four games in the series, started the rally against reliever Ross Wolf (L, 1-2) thanks to a swinging bunt from pinch-hitter Adam Haley. Danny Richar, who went 3-3 during the game, ripped a single off of first baseman Michael Tucker's glove, sending Haley to third.
Gonzalez then pushed a bunt to the right of the pitcher's mound, fielded by Wolf for the out as Haley scored to put the Smokies ahead 2-1. Alex Frazier followed with a run-scoring single to right-center for the 3-1 lead.
Carolina (7-12), which fell into sole possession of last in the Northern Division, assumed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a double by Angel Molina to score Alejandro DeAza. The Smokies tied the game in the bottom half against Paul Mildren on a single by Jamie D'Antona. Mildren worked 5+ innings, allowing five hits and a run, fanning four.
Ross Ohledorf worked the first six for Tennessee, yielding one run on five hits while striking out six. Clint Goocher (W, 2-0) earned the win pitching the seventh, then Mike Schultz (S, 3) notched his third save by recording the final six outs of the game.
The Mudcats managed just seven hits in the game, two apiece from Tucker and Jose Campusano. Campusano entered the game leading the Southern League in hitting at .382, went 2-4 with three stolen bases, and now has retaken the league lead in that category as well, now with 11.
Ben Julianel (0-1, 0.96) starts the series finale Tuesday night against Tennessee's Micah Owings (1-0, 3.12) at 7:15 PM ET.
