W 4-1

Chattanooga, TN --- Opening an eight-game series, Josh Johnson allowed just one run in six innings, while catcher Jason Hill drove in three as Carolina defeated Chattanooga 4-1 on Friday night at BellSouth Park.

Johnson (W, 5-1) fanned five over his start and retired the final eight hitters he faced.  Kevin Cave and Chris Resop (S, 9) combined for three perfect innings as Mudcats pitchers retired the final 17 batters of the game.

Hill was the story offensively, coming a home run short of the cycle.  Hill tripled in a first inning run, doubled in a run in the third and singled in another in the seventh for a 3-5 night.  Hill's first inning triple was contested by Carolina (30-17) as the ball appeared to have hit over the wall and caromed back into centerfield, however the original ruling stood, giving Hill just his fifth career triple.

Chattanooga's only run came in the fourth inning, when down 2-0, the Lookouts (21-27) strung three consecutive hits against Johnson.  With runners at second and third, however, Johnson fanned Bryan Anderson and retired Rick Asadoorian on a grounder to short to exit the inning.

Chris Bass homered leading off the eighth for his first since April 11th, going 2-4 with a double, while Robert Andino went 2-5 with a double and scored a run.

Carolina is now 5-0 at BellSouth this season, outscoring the Lookouts 39-17 in those five games, and 7-2 overall against Chattanooga.  The series continues with Chattanooga in Tennessee through Monday afternoon before returning to Five County Tuesday through Friday.  Following the series conclusion with the Lookouts, the Mudcats will play first-place West Tenn four straight.  The Diamond Jaxx began the night 3 1/2 games ahead of Carolina.

Scott Olsen (4-3, 3.91) starts Saturday night against Richie Gardner (2-4, 7.71) at 7:15 PM ET.
