Jackson, TN --- Carmen Pignatiello allowed one run over seven innings, pitching the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx to a 4-3 victory over the Carolina Mudcats on Tuesday night at Pringles Park.
The Mudcats (25-13) trailed 3-0 into the seventh, but pushed across runs in the final three innings, but stranded the tying run in the ninth to fall 2 1/2 games behind in the Northern Division.
Jason Hill doubled home Jeremy Hermida in the seventh, then a Robert Andino single in the eighth brought in Eric Reed as Carolina closed to within 3-2.
West Tenn (28-11) added an insurance run against reliever Jerrod Fuell in the bottom half to go up 4-2.
In the ninth, a two-out single by James Shanks started the rally. Shanks took second on catcher's indifference, then scored on a single by Chris Bass. Rex Rundgren hit into a tight force play at second to end the game.
Nic Ungs (L, 1-4) pitched five innings, allowing four hits and three runs to absorb the loss. Ryan Baker pitched two scoreless innings on a hit and a walk.
Pignatiello permitted just three hits, the first coming in succession in the fourth inning, en route to his fourth win of the season.
West Tenn went ahead in a 34-pitch second inning against Ungs. With two outs, Jose Reyes singled home Brandon Sing, followed by Pignatiello's first hit of the year to put the Diamond Jaxx up 2-0. Felix Pie hit a solo homer in the fifth.
The Mudcats conclude their six-game road trip Wednesday at 12:05 PM ET in the series finale against West Tenn. Logan Kensing (4-1, 2.95) starts against Reynel Pinto (0-0, 4.50).
