L 6-0
Sevierville, TN --- Adam Bass pitched seven scoreless innings for the second consecutive start as Tennessee evened the series against the Carolina Mudcats with a 6-0 shutout victory at Smokies Park on Saturday night.
Bass (W, 1-3) earned his first win of the season in seven starts, following up seven shutout last Monday against first-place West Tenn, by firing seven more against the Mudcats (24-11).
The shutout was the first suffered by Carolina in a 64 game span, since Huntsville blanked Carolina 5-0 on August 7, 2004.
Yorman Bazardo (L, 3-2) allowed six runs, four earned, over 5 1/3 innings. The Smokies (14-22) scored four in the second inning thanks to four straight hits, an error on Bazardo and a wild pitch. Tennessee went ahead 5-0 in the third inning on a single by Jon Zeringue, knocking in his second run of the game.
Carolina managed just five singles in the game, and its best scoring chance came in the seventh inning, but stranded the bases loaded against Bass.
The win was the Smokies' first in five season meetings with the Mudcats.
The Mudcats dropped a game in the standings to West Tenn, which defeated Chattanooga Saturday night 7-3. Carolina stands 1 1/2 behind, and completes its series with the Smokies Sunday at 5:00 PM ET before heading to play West Tenn in a three-game series beginning Monday night.
Josh Johnson (4-1, 1.83) will be activated from the disabled list prior to Sunday's game to start for Carolina.
