Sevierville, TN --- The Carolina Mudcats roared in the first of its six-game road trip, drilling the Tennessee 12-5 in the opener of the series on Friday night at Smokies Park.
Jeremy Hermida paced the 18-hit attack going 4-6, while Robert Andino hit a grand slam as Carolina (24-10) built a 12-3 lead by the fifth inning.
Logan Kensing (W, 4-1) was the recipient of the season's second best offensive night. Kensing allowed five runs over five innings, but drove in two with a pair of singles.
James Shanks went 1-4 with three RBI, while Michael Tucker and Rex Rundgren each had three hits.
The Mudcats also swiped five bases, including three by Eric Reed, who scored twice.
Carolina picked up a game on first-place West Tenn, which lost in 10 innings at Chattanooga. The Mudcats are within a half-game in the Northern Division.
Jesus Cota homered twice and drove in four for the Smokies.
Yorman Bazardo (3-1, 3.23) starts Saturday's second game with the Smokies (13-22) against Adam Bass (0-3, 5.17) at 7:15 PM ET.
