Zebulon, NC --- Chris Denorfia singled in the tie-breaking runs as part of a four-run seventh inning as Chattanooga defeated the Carolina Mudcats for the first time in seven tries this season, 5-3 at Five County Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Mudcats (23-9) were leading 2-1 before Scott Olsen filled the bases with one out. Ross Wolf entered in relief and allowed a tying pinch-single to Alex Fernandez ahead of Denorfia's hit. Santiago Perez followed with a loop-single to center for a 5-2 lead.
Carolina brought the winning run up in the ninth, however Eric Reed popped out to center against Bubba Nelson to end the game.
Bryan Anderson homered to open the game against Olsen (L, 4-1), who fanned a season-high nine batters over 6 1/3 innings.
The Mudcats took a 2-1 lead against Jeff Bruksch (W, 2-2) in the sixth inning on a two-out double by Jeremy Hermida followed by a single by Todd Sears.
The Lookouts (14-19) broke a string of seven straight losses dating to August, 2004 against the Mudcats, and dropped Carolina 1 1/2 behind first-place West Tenn.
Nic Ungs (1-2, 4.55) starts Thursday night against the Lookouts' Lance Caraccioli (3-3, 4.76) at 7:15 PM ET to end the homestand.
