Zebulon, NC --- JC Muniz and Dennis Anderson combined for five hits and all four RBI, leading the Carolina patchwork pitching staff to a 4-2 victory over the Chattanooga Lookouts before 5,120 fans at Five County Stadium on Friday night.
Anderson drove in three runs with a pair of singles and a sac fly, while Muniz went 3-3 with a double, RBI and a run scored, sending Carolina (36-18) to its seventh win in eight games over the Lookouts (22-33).
The Mudcats enter a four-game series with first-place West Tenn Saturday night 1 1/2 behind in the Northern Division with 15 games remaining in the first half. West Tenn owns the best record (38-17) in minor league baseball, Carolina has the third.
In the second inning, Mudcats starter Nic Ungs fanned Kyle Nichols for the second out, but had to be removed with a strained deltoid muscle. Ryan Baker entered to pitch 3 1/3 scoreless innings as Carolina took a 1-0 lead. In the second, Anderson drove a two-strike pitch from Ben Kozlowski (L, 2-1) over the head of second baseman Kevin Howard to score Muniz, who singled and stole second.
Chattanooga took a 2-1 lead in the sixth with two runs without a hit. Jimmy Demontel, who was making just his second Double-A appearance, walked three hitters in a row, surrendered a sacrifice fly and, after an intentional walk, watched as a grounder by Brian Peterson scored the go-ahead run.
The Mudcats went back into the lead in the bottom half against Kozlowski as the inning started with a double to left by Jason Hill. Chris Bass walked on four pitches before Kozlowski threw wide of first on a sacrifice bunt by Drew Niles. Muniz hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game, then Anderson followed with a single to center to bring home Bass with the go-ahead run.
In the eighth, Anderson delivered a sacrifice fly to score Niles, a run charged to reliever Lance Caraccioli.
Jerrod Fuell (W, 2-1) earned the victory with two scoreless innings, while Chris Resop (S, 13) notched his league-best 13th save.
Scott Olsen (4-3, 3.91) opens the series against West Tenn Saturday night at 7:15 PM ET against David Aardsma (1-0, 1.80). The first 1,200 youths 14 and under will receive a baseball bat courtesy of St. Lawrence Homes.
