Zebulon, NC --- Norris Hopper had three more hits while Richie Gardner earned his first win in three starts against the Carolina Mudcats as the Chattanooga Lookouts beat Carolina 6-4 on Thursday night at Five County Stadium.
Hopper, who is 15-of-33 in the first seven games of the home-and-home series, went 3-4 with two steals, a double and an RBI to snap Carolina's six-game winning streak.
Chattanooga (22-32) took a 2-0 lead against Yorman Bazardo (L, 4-3) in the first inning on a two-run single by Kevin Howard. The Lookouts added two more in the sixth before Bazardo was finished. Bazardo was making his first appearance since his major league debut for the Florida Marlins last Thursday against the New York Mets.
The Mudcats (35-18) did not lose any ground to first-place West Tenn, which also lost Thursday at Tennessee 6-3. Carolina will start Friday's action 1 1/2 games behind in the North with 16 to play in the first half.
Gardner (W, 3-5) blanked Carolina through six innings before leaving one out into the seventh with two runners aboard. David Shafer came on in relief to allow a run-scoring single to Frank Moore to cut the deficit to 4-1, but fanned the next two hitters.
After Jimmy Demontel threw a scoreless inning in his Double-A debut, Chattanooga added two runs in the eighth against Ross Wolf. Carolina countered with a run in the bottom of the eighth as Jeremy Hermida avoided a double-play grounder.
Trailing 6-2 in the ninth, Luke Lockwood hit a pinch, two-run single to score JC Muniz and Moore to make it 6-4. Eric Reed followed with a one-out single before Robert Andino fanned against Bubba Nelson. Jason Hill, representing the winning run, grounded out to second to end the game.
Nic Ungs (2-4, 4.39) starts the series finale with Chattanooga Friday night against Ben Kozlowski (2-0, 3.81) at 7:15 PM ET at Five County.
