L 2-1
Sevierville, TN --- Marland Williams singled home Jerry Gil with the winning run two outs into the bottom of the ninth as Tennessee beat Carolina 2-1 on Saturday night at Smokies Park.
The loss, Carolina's ninth straight, came after Jeremy Hermida crushed his 13th homer of the season to tie the game in the seventh against Adam Bass. Tennessee's victory was their 10th in a row, and third in three nights over the Mudcats (40-27).
Tennessee (33-36) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Dan Uggla scored on a tight play at home plate after a single by Jamie D'Antona.
In the ninth, reliever Mike McNutt (L, 1-1) retired the first two hitters before a single by Gil. Gil stole second base on an 0-2 pitch, then scored on Williams' single to right-center.
The loss spoiled a game that featured splendid defense on both sides, and two strong starts. Ray Aguilar, making his Mudcats debut, allowed just two hits in his five innings. Bass pitched a season-high eight innings, permitting four hits and a run without a walk.
Carolina concludes the first half on Sunday at 5:00 PM ET with Scott Olsen starting against Jesus Silva.
