W 2-0; Ungs No-Hitts Diamond Jaxx
Jackson, TN --- Carolina RHP Nic Ungs pitched the first individual no-hitter in franchise history, fanning Luis Montanez for the final out of a 2-0 masterpiece at Pringles Park over the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx.
Ungs (W, 6-4), who had not thrown a no-hitter of any kind in his childhood or amateur days, made 118 pitches during his historic walk into the 15-year Mudcat history. Six baserunners reached against Ungs, however he still had faced the minimum 21 hitters through seven innings. Ungs walked five and committed an error picking up a ball near the first base line in the fifth. West Tenn hit into two double plays and had two runners thrown out stealing.
Ungs saw only one hard hit ball the entire night, a line shot hit by Dwaine Bacon with one out in the ninth, which carried directly at Jeremy Hermida in right field.
With an eighth inning strikeout of Aaron Sisk for the second out of the inning, Ungs had taken an individual attempt at a Mudcat no-hitter further than anyone prior.
Of the 27 outs, 12 were infield groundouts, including two double plays, along with seven strikeouts and two others made on the basepaths. Ungs remained unbeaten since May 24th, an eight-start span including five victories.
Carolina has had a pair of combined no-hitters, and West Tenn had never been no-hit before Friday night.
Carolina (20-12) moved into a virtual first-place tie with West Tenn (21-13) in the Northern Division. The Mudcats scored the game's only two runs against Jae Kuk-Ryu in the third inning on RBI-singles by Hermida and Jason Hill, who caught the no-hitter.
Adam Bostick (2-1, 2.60) starts Saturday night against Ryan O'Malley (3-0, 4.20) at 8:05 PM ET.
