Zebulon, NC --- Josh Johnson earned a five-inning complete game victory as Carolina won its third straight game a five-inning rain-shortened 6-1 win over the Jacksonville Suns at Five County Stadium on Friday night.
Johnson (W, 9-4) allowed just a first-inning run and struck out six hitters. The game ended before the first pitch of the top of the sixth following a nearly one-hour rain delay.
Carolina (16-10) tied the game in the last of the first on a single by Jeremy Hermida, then went ahead against losing pitcher Edwin Jackson (L, 3-3) with two in the second and third. Chris Bass delivered a tie-breaking single in the second, while a grounder from Frank Moore drove in another. In the third, James Shanks singled home Hermida, followed by a sacrifice fly by Drew Niles. The Mudcats added their final run in the fourth on a base hit by Robert Andino.
The Mudcats managed nine hits in the abridged affair, evening the season series with the Suns 7-7. Carolina remained in a first-place tie with first-half champ West Tenn in the Northern Division.
Nic Ungs (5-4) starts on Saturday night at Five County at 7:15 PM ET in the middle game against the Suns.
