Chattanooga, TN --- Nic Ungs won his fourth straight decision while the Carolina offense hung up 14 hits in defeating Chattanooga 9-1 in the series opener on Monday night at Bell South Park.
Ungs (W, 5-4) allowed four hits and one run en route to his fifth victory of the season. The Lookouts took a 1-0 lead in the first, filling the bases with none out on three singles. Ungs escaped with only a sacrifice fly by Stephen Smitherman costing him a run.
Carolina tied the game in the third on a single by James Shanks, then went ahead on a base hit by Rex Rundgren in the fourth.
The Mudcats put the game out of reach with four runs in the fifth. Jeremy Hermida doubled against the centerfield wall to score a run, then Jason Hill singled to left to bring Hermida home for a 4-1 lead. Later in the inning, Chris Bass doubled home two runs for a 6-1 advantage.
Reggie Abercrombie hit a two-run homer in the ninth for added insurance as the Mudcats remained in sole possession of first place in the North.
The Mudcats improved to 9-0 at Bell South Park in 2005, and won for the 10th straight meeting dating back to July, 2004. Carolina is 16-5 in head-to-head meetings against the Lookouts this season.
Adam Bostick will start Tuesday night for the Mudcats against Bobby Basham at 7:15 PM ET.
