Zebulon, NC --- The Mobile BayBears scored in each of the first four innings en route to an easy win over the first-place Carolina Mudcats, 14-6 at Five County Stadium before 5,244 fans on Saturday night.
Jeff Duncan and Corey Smith combined for eight hits and eight RBI to lead the BayBears to their second straight win.
Carolina's lead in the Northern Division shriveled to one game due to West Tenn's 3-0 victory over Chattanooga.
Jose Oyervidez (W, 7-9) allowed two hits in 7 1/3 innings to earn the victory, fanning five.
Mobile scored two runs in the first three innings, then added three in the fourth to claim a 9-0 lead. Adam Bostick (L, 4-3) worked 2 2/3 innings for the second consecutive start before leaving the third inning with an apparent injury.
Trailing 12-1 in the eighth, JC Muniz hit a grand slam, Carolina's fourth of the season. The Mudcats managed just three hits in the loss, drawing five walks from three BayBears pitchers. Jason Hill hit a solo homer in the seventh, his team-leading 18th of the season.
James Russ makes his Double-A debut for the Mudcats Sunday at 4:00 PM ET against Mobile's Jared Wells (2-4, 4.14).
