L 10-4
Chattanooga, TN --- Bobby Basham took a no-hitter into the sixth inning as the Chattanooga Lookouts dropped first-place Carolina 10-4 in the series opener Monday night at Bell South Park.
Basham (W, 4-3) checked the Mudcats (32-23, 73-50) over the first 5 1/3 innings before pinch-hitter Chris Bass grounded a single to left field to break up the bid. The Lookouts (22-34, 49-76) had built a 9-0 lead against Carolina starter Adam Bostick (L, 4-2) and reliever Ross Wolf.
The Mudcats started the night 1 1/2 ahead of West Tenn in the North.
Chattanooga scored a run in the first and second, the latter coming on a solo homer by Brian Peterson. The Lookouts then knocked Bostick out of the game in the third with five two-out runs. Bostick made 80 pitches over his 2 2/3 innings. Wolf worked 2 1/3, permitting three hits, four walks and two runs.
The Mudcats went through four pitchers, and then threw infielder Michael Tucker to the mound in the eighth. Tucker, whose pitching performance was his second this season, permitted three hits and a run.
The Mudcats scored twice against Basham in the seventh on a wild pitch and RBI-double by Dennis Anderson. Lookouts reliever Eric Eckenstahler walked in a run in the eighth and ninth before being taken out of the game.
Carolina managed just seven hits spread out across seven batters. Jason Hill, who recorded his 32nd double in the seventh inning, drove in one of the runs, while Frank Moore walked with the bases loaded in the ninth.
Ray Aguilar (4-1, 3.19) starts Tuesday night at 7:15 PM ET against Travis Chick (2-10, 5.20).
