L 6 - 2

Huntsville, AL --- Three Carolina errors sparked four two run-scoring innings as Huntsville beat the Mudcats for the first time in six tries in 2005, defeating Carolina 6-2 on Saturday night at Davis Stadium.

Carolina will open Sunday a half-game ahead of second place Chattanooga in the North, which also lost Saturday night.

Throwing errors by starting pitcher Nic Ungs and Chris Bass keyed a three-run sixth inning as the Stars (2-7) opened up a 6-1 lead.  Ungs threw a grounder into left field on a comebacker that appeared to lead to a double play.  However, Nelson Cruz broke to second base on the pitch, and the surprised Ungs wheeled toward second, but threw the ball on the ground through shortstop.  That event helped to load the bases with no outs before Ungs retired the next two hitters.  A wild pitch scored one run, followed by a walk to refill the bases prior to a two-run throwing error by Bass, who was just inserted into the game with a double-switch.

Back in the first inning, a double by Kenard Bibbs and a pair of bunt singles by Tony Gwynn and Brandon Gemoll led to two runs.  Third baseman Drew Niles charged the first bunt from Gwynn, but the ball jumped over his barehanded attempt.  Bibbs rounded third and scored as Niles retreated to pick up the ball, but threw wildly to home allowing Gwynn to reach second.  The second run of the inning came home on one of three double-play grounders hit into by the Stars.

Carolina (6-2) took a 1-0 lead in the first on a two-out single by Todd Sears, driving home Robert Andino, who had doubled inside the third base bag.

Ungs (L, 0-1) was charged with two earned runs of the six that scored over 5 2/3 innings.  Luke Lockwood relieved in the sixth, working 1 1/3 scoreless, while Chad Bentz permitted two hits in a scoreless eighth.

Niles stroked a single in the eighth to knock home Carolina's other run.

Glenn Woolard (W, 1-1) earned the win, yielding four hits and one run over five innings.

The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 3:05 PM ET with Logan Kensing (1-0, 0.00) starting against Huntsville's Khalid Ballouli (0-0, 0.00).
