Zebulon, NC --- Not even a change in scenery could stop the Carolina Mudcats freefall over the past four days, dropping their fourth straight to the resurgent Jacksonville Suns 7-1 at Five County Stadium on Monday night.
Carolina (40-22) dropped three straight in Jacksonville, and with Monday's loss, have been outscored 36-4 in four successive losses. Carolina began the night in an identical tie for first in the North with West Tenn.
Peter Bauer (L, 0-1) suffered the loss in his first start back with the Mudcats. Bauer, who went 2-4 at Triple-A, allowed three runs in the first, including the first of two Jon Weber homers. Weber homered against Ryan Baker in the seventh.
The Suns (35-29) added a run in the third, and two more in the ninth against reliever Mike Flannery. William Juarez (W, 4-0) worked 5 1/3 innings in an emergency start for the Suns, filling in for Chad Billingsley, who was scratched with the flu. Weber finished the game 4-4 with two homers and three RBI. Beau Dannemiller (S, 5) pitched the final 3 2/3 innings to earn his fifth save.
Trailing 7-0 in the ninth, the Mudcats pushed across its only run on a two-out single by Robert Andino. The Mudcats had 11 hits in the game, stranded 11 baserunners, and went 1-11 with runners in scoring position, and now 3-41 during the losing streak.
Jeremy Hermida and Drew Niles had two hits apiece for Carolina, each collecting a double.
Scott Olsen (5-3, 3.36) starts Tuesday night against Eric Stults (3-3, 3.02) at 7:15 PM ET at Five County Stadium.
